Worn out and legacy parts

Older machinery often stays essential long after its parts become hard to source. We scan the worn or obsolete component and recreate the CAD models and engineering drawings needed to manufacture a replacement and keep the machinery working.

When the drawings are gone

Older machinery often remains essential long after replacement parts become difficult to source. Original drawings may have been lost, or may still be held by the original equipment manufacturer, leaving you facing expensive replacements and limited options.

Our reverse engineering service recreates the CAD models and engineering drawings needed to manufacture replacement components and keep the machinery working.

We bring the scanning to your machinery

There is no need to send a whole machine to us. During a planned shutdown or overhaul, your maintenance team can dismantle the machinery and lay out the components for scanning alongside it.

We can capture the accessible parts in a single visit, creating a digital record for future use. Our team travels to sites across the UK and worldwide, including remote oil, gas and industrial facilities.

3D Scanworx engineers scanning components on site at an industrial facility

More complete information. Fewer return visits.

Measuring complex components by hand with micrometers and vernier callipers takes time, and it is easy to miss a dimension, particularly on curved surfaces, cast housings and irregular shapes.

3D scanning captures the accessible surface geometry in detail, so we can go back to the data as the CAD model develops. Targeted measurements supplement the scan where tight tolerances or inaccessible features need them.

That reduces the risk of finding a critical measurement missing after the machinery has been put back together.

From physical part to finished CAD model

One valve body, followed from the worn casting to the drawing: captured with a 3D scanner, recorded as raw scan data and rebuilt as a parametric CAD model, with drawings for casting and final machining.

  1. Valve body: the worn legacy part01

    Legacy part

The original valve body, worn and with no drawing.

  2. Valve body: raw scan mesh02

    Scan data

The raw mesh captured by the 3D scan.

  3. Valve body: parametric CAD built over the scan03

    CAD over the scan

The parametric model built on top of the mesh.

  4. Valve body: finished parametric CAD model04

    Finished CAD model

The editable parametric model on its own.

  5. Valve body: accuracy check of CAD against scan05

    Accuracy check

A colour map showing how closely the CAD matches the scan.

  6. Valve body: 2D engineering drawing06

    2D drawing

The engineering drawing for casting or machining.

Scan once. Create replacement models when you need them.

You do not need a CAD model of every component straight away: the scan data can be kept as a digital archive, ready for when a replacement is needed. Where a part is worn or damaged, we read the scan alongside its mating parts, the information you have and your engineering requirements to reconstruct its intended geometry.

  • Parametric CAD model

Editable for manufacture or future design changes, as STEP, Parasolid or a native feature tree.

  • Casting model and 2D drawing

Adjusted with the shrinkage and machining allowances agreed with your foundry.

  • Machining drawing

The dimensions, tolerances and finishes needed to complete the part.

FAQ

If yours is not here, ring 0330 229 0175 and ask for the scanning team.

Not answered here?

Ask the engineers who run the machines. We answer the same working day.

Do we need to send the whole machine?

No. We come to you, ideally during a planned shutdown or overhaul, and scan the components where your team has laid them out beside the machinery.

Do we need CAD for every part straight away?

No. We can scan everything accessible in one visit and keep the data as a digital archive. A CAD model or drawing is then made for each part when a replacement is actually needed.

Can you rebuild a part that is worn or damaged?

Yes. We assess the scan alongside the mating parts, any information you have and your engineering requirements, and model the part as it was meant to be rather than as it is now.

What do you need from us to quote?

Photographs of the component, its approximate dimensions and where the machinery is. From that we can discuss the scanning and the models or drawings needed for manufacture.

Need to recreate a replacement part?

Send us photographs of the component, its approximate dimensions and the location of the machinery. We can discuss the scanning requirements and the models or drawings needed for manufacture.
