3D scanning for energy and utilities
Plant rooms, pipework, substations and process plant. As-builts for retrofit and shutdowns, digital twin geometry for operations, plus reverse engineered parts when the original is obsolete. Scanned for you or with kit from a UK Artec Gold Certified partner.

Why plant is hard to measure
Congested, live and rarely as drawn
- 01
Shutdown windows are short
Every hour offline costs. Capture has to fit the window. The data has to be complete the first time.
- 02
The drawings stopped at commissioning
Plant has been modified twice since and nobody kept the changes, so a twin or a retrofit built on drawings starts wrong.
- 03
Congested pipework
Pipe racks, valves and cable runs are impossible to tape accurately. They are also slow to sketch by hand.
- 04
Height and hazard
Flare stacks, tank tops and overhead lines mean scaffold or access equipment, unless you scan from the ground or the air.
- 05
Obsolete parts
A failed valve body or impeller with no drawing and a long lead time on a replacement.
Plant room as-built
One visit, one registered model of the room and everything in it
Ray II for the room, Jet for the routes between rooms, Leo for the equipment that needs detail. Artec Studio’s Smart Fusion merges Leo and Ray II data in one step, keeping the higher-resolution data where the Leo scanned.
- 1
Plan around the permit
Areas, isolations, access and what the model is for: retrofit, clash checking, a twin for operations or training. That decides the accuracy.
- 2
Scan the room
Ray II stations pre-align themselves as you move, with double scan removing people walking through. No targets to place.
- 3
Walk the routes
The Jet maps corridors, cable runs and outdoor plant at walking pace. A telescopic pole reaches into ceiling voids.
- 4
Detail the equipment
A wireless Leo captures valves, flanges and pumps in colour, inside cages or tight spaces with no cables trailing.
- 5
Merge and deliver
Registered cloud in E57 or RCP, meshes of individual assets decimated for your twin platform, plus CAD of parts that need remaking.
Recommended products
Leo and Ray II are the pair Artec bundle for plant work. Add a Jet for large sites, or a Kreon arm for parts that must be measured to the micron.

Questions we get asked
Something else? Ring 0330 229 0175 and an engineer will answer it.
Not answered here?
Ask the engineers who run the machines. We answer the same working day.
Which scanner will you use in a plant room?
Usually two of three: the Leo for equipment and detail in colour, the Ray II for the room around it, or the Jet where the site is too large to finish from a tripod in a shift.
Can you update the twin later?
Yes. A rescan of the changed area registers into the original cloud, so the twin stays current without starting again.
Is the Ray II safe to use on site?
It uses a Class 1 laser that is invisible and eye safe. It is rated IP54 against dust and water. It is declared to conform to 11 European safety standards.
Can you remake a part with no drawing?
Yes. We scan it and rebuild it in Geomagic Design X as editable CAD. We can then 3D print it or hand it to your machine shop.
What formats do you deliver for a twin?
Registered point clouds in E57, LAS or RCP, georeferenced where control exists, plus meshes decimated to a target polygon count.
Tell us the plant, the window and what the model is for
We will tell you which scanners the job needs, how long we need on site and what you will get, before the shutdown is booked.
