Sculpture and art scanning

Scan a sculpture from a jewellery-sized maquette to a monumental work, down to the tool marks and thumbprints. Archive it, enlarge it, show it online or print it as the pattern for a bronze.

Foundry workers finishing the Wallace and Gromit bronze, enlarged from a scanned maquette

What it is

From maquette to monument: archive, scale, reproduce or cast.

Sculpture scanning captures an artwork’s form and its surface, including the marks the artist left. The model can be archived for insurance, enlarged or reduced for production, rendered for approval, or printed as the pattern for casting.

Our scanners go to the studio or the plinth. The scan then joins our print bureau and the foundries we work with, so a maquette can become a bronze without leaving the workflow.

Why scan it

What 3D capture changes about this job, against tape, callipers and drawings.

  1. 01

    Archived for insurance

A digital archive of the work for insurance and future preservation.

  2. 02

    Watch it age

Monitor degradation year on year, with a master model kept in case restoration is needed.

  3. 03

    Enlarge or reduce

Scale the work up or down as part of the manufacturing workflow.

  4. 04

    Shown in the round

Display the work online as a fully rotatable, interactive model.

Questions we get asked

Something else? Ring 0330 229 0175 and an engineer will answer it.

Will the scan pick up tool marks and fingerprints?

Yes. The Wallace and Gromit maquette was scanned at high resolution so the original thumbprints as well as hand-made impressions carried into the bronze.

How long does it take from scan to print?

For the Poppy Field sculpture, the whole process from scan to 3D print took around seven days.

Rather we did it for you?

Bring it to Whitchurch or we come to you. An engineer scopes the job, captures it and hands back the data in the format your team works in. Or hire the scanner for a week and do it yourself.
